With the recent expansions and up gradations in ITM and TTM complete, rapid modernization of STM has the become the central focus of the Top Management of Tata Industries. The vision is that after the changeover Unit # 2 at STM will be converted to cotton yarn production. The focus will to be to produce coarse cotton counts Ne 7/1 – Ne 12/1 and specialized cotton products like Lycra coated cotton yarn, cotton slub and cotton lycra slub. Unit # 1 will remain in the production of synthetic yarn but being completely modernized it will be in a position to produce yarn quality to challenge the market leaders in this segment and to target the high end weavers and users in the synthetic market with the crux being on the synthetic market of Karachi. The initial groundwork has already been started since January 2004 with the reconstruction of the existing plant buildings. Carrying out construction in an existing operational premises is a challenging and laborious task which the STM team under guidance of the top management has been able to complete without in any way disturbing the day to day operations or the quality of the products of STM. With the construction in its final phase decisions regarding machinery procurements are underway. The purchase of twenty ring frames from (detail) had been finalized in the last quarter of 2004, and the same have arrived at the mills and are under erection in Unit # 1. With the production from the same commencing from the first week of March 2005 the final stretch of the road to modernization of STM is in view. Inshallah like many of the milestones successfully achieved by this group this will be soon one of them and a new era of market leadership will be heralded for STM.
